The Coast Guard says it believes Wednesday’s fuel spill into English Bay has virtually all been contained.
Assistant Comissioner Roger Girouard says Transport Canada overflights show about a half-liter of substance still in the water.
“From that initial TC assessment – we’ve captured the lion’s share. I cannot say we’ve captured it all, you never get it all.”
Girouard says the water both inside and outside the booms around the leaking ship appears clean — and that they will try to replace the soiled booms today.
He also says the likelihood of the oil sinking is slim – but they’ll be looking at the seafloor to be sure.
Girouard also admits that there were communications failures in the Coast Guard’s spill response – and that it plans to learn from its mistakes.
