While the Conservatives rule out re-opening Kits Coast Guard base the Liberal leader is pledging the opposite should his party win the next election.
Vancouver MP Joyce Murray says Justin Trudeau has promised to open a Coast Guard base in Vancouver.
“Mr. Trudeau who has lived and worked in Vancouver for a number of years understands how important the clean environment and the ecology are to us and has pledged to have a year round Coast Guard base located in Vancouver.”
However Murray says the base might not be at Kits but elsewhere in Vancouver.
She says it depends on the status of the Kits base land.
“Should we form government we will have to see what the status of the property is. Is that the best place possibly exactly where it was before. I am not privy to what other committments may have been made on that location. It is important to have a year around full coast guard base in Vancouver and that is what we will do.”
Murray says it is clear the response to the spill would have been much faster if Kits Coast Guard base had been opened.
She says Kits Base had the equipment and trained crews who could have been on scene in minutes not hours.
