A Vancouver not-for-profit agency says the bizarre story of a Richmond aunt super-gluing her baby nephew’s ears shut out of jealousy that she does not have a son, should not reflect on the Chinese culture.
Queenie Choo, the CEO of S.U.C.C.E.S.S., says she was disturbed to learn 30-year-old Wei Wang was sentenced to four months in jail for aggravated assault after the 2013 incident.
“I hope that this is not what people are thinking about the Chinese culture, this could definitely apply to other cultures as well, or other people of other background, this could be an isolated incident, it’s very unfortunate to the family, to the baby, to the parents, and I think there is lots of education that needs to be done.”
Police blame the incident on a combination of jealousy and the weight of cultural pressure to conceive male offspring.
