A Mission mom has been put behind bars for stealing $116,000 from police exhibits to support her gambling problem, while working for the Mission RCMP.
April Smith, 46, is sentenced to 18 months in jail, two years probation, and she is ordered to pay all of that money back.
Smith pleaded guilty in July to breach of trust by a public officer.
She was working as a police exhibit custodian, logging and processing cash, drugs and weapons picked up by police.
Smith began taking bundles of cash to blow at the casino, cover daily expenses, and upgrade her vehicle.
She was caught following a 2013 audit, removed from the position, and then fired a year later when she was charged.
Smith claims she was borrowing the money.
