Are the rumours true: will St Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver wind up in a different location?
BC’s health minister won’t say.
The Liberal government has long toyed with the idea of scaling down or even shutting down the aging and crumbling St Paul’s in favour of a new site on False Creek, although Premier Christy Clark did promise a half billion-dollar upgrade three years ago.
Now, Health Minister Terry Lake is hedging his bets, twice refusing to give a guarantee that St. Paul’s will remain on Burrard Street.
“It’s important to me that we don’t just tick off a box that says yes, we rebuilt a hospital…that in fact we do provide the very best care for today and tomorrow’s population.”
Lake says he’s waiting on a refurbishment plan from Providence Health Care before making any decisions.
