We are now hearing from a woman taken hostage by her ex-boyfriend outside the Starlight Casino two and a half years ago.
Tetiana Piltsina tells The Province newspaper, the police officer who shot Mehrdad Bayrami should not have been charged with murder.
“I feel a little bit, not guilty, but I’m – you know – responsible, some kind of…this situation that’s happened to him.”
Delta Police Constable Jordan MacWilliams faces a second degree murder charge, for the November 2012 shooting.
We don’t know much about what happened, but a lawsuit filed by Bayrami’s daughter claims he was shot while walking backwards – with his hands in the air.
Piltsina says she had already escaped Bayrami for several hours when he was shot, but still considers MacWilliams a hero.
She adds, the independent police watch dog that investigated the shooting never spoke to her before recommending charges.
Piltsina says she tried to call the Independent Investigations Office herself, but that call was never returned.
