Three workers have been taken to hospital after an explosion outside a coal mine in Southeastern BC.
It happened Sunday morning at Teck’s Greenhills operation, Northeast of the community of Elkford.
The explosion actually took place inside a pulverizer room, which basically grinds coal for combustion.
No one was inside the room when it happened, but three workers outside were injured.
BC Ambulance says they were transported to hospitals in Sparwood and Fernie with second and third degree burns.
It’s not the first explosion at the Teck Greenhills operation.
In 2010, four workers were injured when there was an explosion in the coal dryer of the same mine.
Teck Resources says it has notified the appropriate regulatory bodies about the fire at 11am on Sunday.
In a statement, Teck says an investigation has been launched to determine what caused the “flash fire.”
