The mayor of Mission says public safety is not at risk, despite two convicted murderers escaping from the minimum-security Ferndale Institution in the past seven months.
A warrant is out for the arrest of 43-year-old Shawn Merrick.
He is serving an indeterminate sentence for second-degree murder and escaped on Tuesday.
Back in August, 41-year-old Norman Riel, also serving time for second degree murder, went missing.
Both are still on the loose.
Mission mayor Randy Hawes says the public should not fear for their safety.
“The authorities are saying they are not dangerous, at the moment I am taking their word for it, but I don’t think anyone in Mission is too alarmed about them being on the loose. We have seen this movie before, a number of times, and we know, they don’t stick around Mission.”
In a statement, the Mission Institution says the Correctional Service of Canada only places offenders who are a low risk into minimum-security institutions.
