The closure of Future Shop signals there may be tough times ahead for suburban and rural shopping centres.
Nine B.C. shopping centres need a new tenant to replace Future Shop.
But CKNW Business Analyst Robert Levy notes three of them are in the tough position of also having to find an anchor tenant to replace Target, which is closing its Canadian stores even earlier than expected.
“Where you’re going to see the impact is the more suburban and when you get a little more rural, because those are the ones with the big retail places that are going to be hard pressed to fill.”
Coquitlam Centre, Lansdowne Centre in Richmond, and Surrey’s Central City were all home to both Future Shop and Target.
