BC Ferries has cancelled all Queen of Oak Bay sailings for the rest of the night, and a man has been transported to hospital in critical condition, after he apparently jumped overboard late Monday afternoon.
It happened around 4:15pm.
Passengers tell crew members they witness a man jumping from the main car deck into the chilly waters below southeast of Bowen Island.
BC Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall says emergency vessels rush to rescue him.
He is taken to hospital in critical condition.
“Queen of Oak Bay we are cancelling her sailings for the remainder of the evening, the crew dealt with a very traumatic situation today, and out of support for the crew, we are cancelling her sailings.”
Passengers are also asked to prepare for delays to the Queen of Cowichan sailings.
That vessel also aided in the marine rescue.
