Since news came to light about the death of one and a half year old Isabella Wiens in her foster care crib in 2013, the opposition spokesman to the Ministry of Children and Family Development says it’s just absolutely sickening.
MLA Doug Donaldson says the death of a baby girl is just one part of this horrific situation. But he can’t understand why a grieving mother has had no answers for two years.
“There’s a pattern of delays and this horrific case fits in with that.”
“What this case highlights – it violates our moral order, our sense of how the world should work. That a child when it’s taken by the government in to foster care should not end up dead.”
Donaldson says there’s an over arching issue: lack of resources and too many cases for social workers.
However, he believes it isn’t just the ministry that needs to be held accountable.
“The premier is the one person who can make the changes we want. And wouldn’t it be awesome today to be the premier and be in a position to have the power to make sure that children in care are safe, happy, and loved.”
He wants to see Premier Christy Clark step up and make some changes, because he believes if she doesn’t-no one can.
Isabella Wiens was found face down and not breathing in her crib in March 2013 with bruising from prior to her death – which remains undetermined.
