UPDATES: Three-alarm fire tears through Surrey apartment building

Around 50 people living at a 4-storey apartment building in Surrey won’t be able to return to their homes after a blaze which started on the roof at 3 a-m this (Sunday) morning.

The fire at 135 Street and the King George Highway was put out after a couple hours, but Surrey Fire Battalion Chief Ed Wells says the building is no longer structurally sound.

Wells adds that an investigation into the cause of the fire won’t take place for at least a few days due to the unstable condition of the apartment.

Deputy Fire Cheif Karen Fry says no one was hurt despite large flames ripping through and causing heavy damage.

“Whether it’s a write off or not, there is heavy damage. The fire is pretty much knocked down at this point in time, so we’re doing all the clean up. We’ll probably have crews on scene through the morning and then security on scene after that.”

Fry says dozens are being taken care of by Emergency Social Services.

No word on what caused the fire near King George Highway and 135th Street.
