Lions put pride on the line

Nothing says come and get me more than a guaranteed win night, and BC Lions President Dennis Skulsky threw down the gauntlet yesterday, guaranteeing that his BC Lions would win at home against the Saskatchewan Roughriders this weekend at BC Place.

Skulsky has promised any fan that is at the game that should the Lions lose, each fan will get one ticket to a game of their choice over the final four home games of the season.

It is a bold statement, but it is also some savvy marketing.  The Roughriders game was already going to be the largest crowd of the season for the Leos, if for no other fact that the Rider fans, Rider Nation, Rider Pride if I must…they travel well and will be in full throat at the big donut on Sunday.

The Riders will now be fired up…and that is great for the BC Lions, who have been hit and miss on home turf this year.

Simply put, the Prez has lit the fire…he believes in his guys and he expects them to deliver.

It is that kind of statement that will put people back in love with the CFL.  Not that there is a lack of admiration from most Canadians about the league, but when I can tell you that we are only 12 sleeps away from the NFL season starting, I can also tell you I am not alone in anticipation of the upcoming season south of the border.

Skulsky knows this…and whether it was a stroke of genius or a complete coincidence, the Lions and Riders game will now be appointment television for those of us who can’t make the game.

Dennis Skulsky just gave his team some free advertising…I will tell you Monday if it was truly free.
