A Professor of Criminology at Simon Fraser University says municipal police forces could bear the brunt of more than 4-million in cuts to the provincial police service.
Robert Gordon says with cuts to the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit and the Provincial Major Crime program, some provincial functions could be offloaded onto municipal police budgets.
“It may be that the municipalities are going to be asked to pick up the slack. For example the VPD will be asked to step up their anti- gang activities and there will be some shift in the way in which these groups do business.”
Gordon also says the cities that will suffer the most are the rural communities in the province.
