Staff make sure homeless don’t light fires in Stanley Park

With these lingering, dry conditions, Vancouver Park Board staff are making sure Stanley Park doesn’t go up in flames.

Park Board Chair Aaron Jasper says there’s a small group of homeless people who live in Stanley Park year round.

Jasper says the numbers balloon a bit in the summer months, BUT luckily there haven’t been any issues.

“With the hot, dry weather we’ve been having, we have a lot of extra staff who are walking through the park, through the trails and just trying to connect with folks, making sure they don’t have campfires and things like that sort.  So, touch wood, at this point there isn’t a problem as in terms of any fire activity.”

Jasper says the homeless have been camping in Stanley Park for decades although bedding down in city parks is prohibited.
