Some huge economic news for Northern BC this afternoon as the provincial government has granted environmental approval to a copper-gold mine that could create more than one thousand permanent jobs.
Energy and Mines minister Bill Bennett says Seabridge Gold has been granted an environmental assessment certificate for the KSM project, just northwest of Stewart.
“Over five billion dollars to build this project out, the anticipated production is 120,000 tonnes of ore per day, the mine life is at least 50 years, so this is a very significant announcement.”
Bennett says the site is one of the largest copper-gold deposits in the world, with a possible lifespan of 52 years.
He says there will be eighteen hundred jobs during construction, then about one-thousand permanenet jobs.
The approval comes with some forty one conditions meant to protect the environment.
