Charges have now been laid after a fatal hit and run claimed the life of a 16-year-old girl in Coquitlam last year.
73 year old Irwin Richard Franz of Port Coquitlam is charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm or death.
Last September at Mary Hill and Pitt River Road 16 year old Annie Leung died, and the hunt was then underway for the driver.
Constable Jamie Chung says the arrest and charge is a huge relief for the family.
“We had a meeting with them this morning, and it was a sign of relief for them…it is part of their closure.”
Family members did not attend the news conference, and say they want to grieve in private now.
Even though the police are calling it a complex investigation, the man accused of striking and killing Annie Leung says he approached police with his lawyer afew days after the accident and admitted that he was responsible.
In an interview with Global News, Irwin Richard Franz says he panicked.
“I didn’t do anything wrong as far as the accident is concerned. I panicked and I walked away and went home that is what I am kicking my butt about ever since because I was just in shock. The accident I know it wasn’t my fault because it could only have happened one way. The police say they have a witness but I don’t know who it is. They won’t tell me anything.”
Franz admits he fled the scene.
“I was in a haze. I was just in shock. I walked down there and said oh my god I am involved in this? I didn’t know for sure. I didn’t know. So I walked down I am not just going to take off I am walking back down and if I can help but she had all the help she could have and I heard the ambulance coming.”
