Wildfire threat eases over the weekend

The wildfire situation across British Columbia significantly improved over the weekend, but some West Kelowna residents are still under orders to stay out of their homes.

The large Smith Creek fire is about 50-per-cent contained and although evacuation orders have been lifted for most of the 2,500 people forced out last week, approximately 300 residents are being kept away from 130 homes still in the danger zone.

Information Officer Navi Saini says 130 wildfires are active providewide.

“Most of these (are) within the Prince George, Kamloops and Coastal fire centre boundaries. Yesterday, we responded to four new fires. Three of these fires were actually human-caused.”

Saini says many campfire bans are also in effect.

So far this season, 646 fires have been recorded.
