Gay MLA rejected in bid to foster child

Spencer Chandra-Herbet touts the benefits of Gay-Straight Alliances in schools

An openly gay Vancouver MLA says he and his partner were denied the chance to foster a child because of their sexual orientation.

On his Facebook page, Vancouver-West End MLA Spencer Chandra-Herbert writes that after being asked by a social worker to foster, and then possibly adopt, a BC born baby abandoned by its birth-parents, they then were given the news the baby’s extended family had vetoed the idea.

The reason: they are not willing to accept a same-sex family.

Chandra-Herbert writes the extended family has no plans to care for the child themselves. He adds he and his partner will continue their quest to one day adopt a child.
