A wildfire in the Peace River region that prompted an evacuation order Tuesday has more than doubled in size in a matter of hours.
Prince George Fire Information Officer Jillian Kelsh says the fire is 61km Southeast of Tumbler Ridge and has grown to 1700 hectares.
“Due to the weather conditions, and the forecasted winds in the area, we did expect it to reach this size, and we do expect it to grow larger, in the next 24-48 hours.”
Kelsh says an additional 40 firefighters are being brought in, which means more than 100 personnel will be fighting the inferno Wednesday morning.
Around 200 workers were evacuated from two oil and gas camps located northeast of the blaze.
As a heat wave sweeps BC, the Wildfire Management Branch is already coping with six new blazes all reported on Tuesday.
