Canucks add Virtanen in draft

The Vancouver Canucks made a bid to move up to the first overall draft selection but ultimately stayed with the sixth overall pick, taking New Westminster native Jake Virtanen from the Calgary Hitmen.

Virtanen registered 45 goals and 26 assists in 71 games for the Hitmen in the Western Hockey League last season and was heralded as the best skater in the draft, with a propensity for the physical game as well.

The Canucks also have another selection in the 24th overall pick, which they acquired in the Ryan Kesler deal.
