A new Israeli health study hopes to pinpoint the link between diabetes and dementia, and they are looking towards Surrey, BC to help provide answers.
An Israeli hospital has been studying elderly Israeli’s to determine why people who suffer from diabetes are at higher risk of developing dementia.
Center Director Michal Beeri says those of South Asian descent are known to have higher incidences of diabetes making Surrey an ideal location to expand the study.
“Diabetes in the South Asian population in general is very high, which means that with their ageing, the risk of developing or the prevalence of dementia is very high.”
It is not currently known why diabetes, hypertension and chronic renal disease rates are much higher in South Asian populations.
