Premier Clark announces changes for Crown Corporations

Vancouver, BC, Canada / (CKNW AM) AM980

BC’s Premier has announced new accountability principles aimed at lowering costs and controlling the spending of Crown Corporations.
Christy Clark announced the Taxpayer Accountability Principles at the Vancouver Leaders’ Dinner Wednesday night, saying the government is keeping it’s promise to ensure taxpayer money is invested wisely.
She says for the first time, every board member of a major Crown Corporation and major entity will have to sign a mandate letter that sets out standards of conduct.

“Control spending, drive down costs while you are preserving and enhancing services for the public. Drive a culture change within your corporation.”

Clark says the government will give guidance on the standards, which will apply to all executives and employees.

  1. Will the current government also be responsible for its spending habits and stop raiding ICBC’s contingency funds so insurance COSTS keep being raised to motorist and BC Hydro for funds to ‘balance the budget’ but at the same time BC’s Provincial Debt keeps on increasing by the billions of dollars every year?

  2. I didn’t know she was a master chartered accountant. Hmm. This will be a real comedy. All the queens horses will have the government hoodwinked and Victoria won’t know it, all the while, stuffing more of our $$$ in their pockets. When she bowed out of oil and gas, why didn’t she enjoy one encore after another, right off the stage and step out of everything, and quit.

      • Who are you people? You mean concerned citizens or do you mean conservative thinking right winged and always right people! You might want us to believe it’s all about the brightest and the best of the 13 watt crowd or dim lighted BC Liberals, tell me it is not true! The BC liberal moving to make the paper trail disappear in the Crown Corps and their accounting practise. The biggest wages are going to the ones hand picked by the BC Liberals!

        • Did you consider that just maybe he meant “people who complain about high salaries of crown corporations” as he clearly said? You’ve been complaining front and center forever and now you complain that it’s getting dealt with. You people (see above for definition) are impossible to figure out.

  3. “Control spending, drive down costs while you are preserving and enhancing services for the public. Drive a culture change within your corporation.”
A noteworthy mandate letter inclusion. You have to ask yourself, what did the previous mandate letter include?

If you want to be silly, that’s fine. Why would she quit when she just won a stunning election that neither you nor the media saw coming.
She has a lot of work to do…starting with extinguishing some of the still smouldering embers who want to start another bonfire.

Master Chartered accountants are the last thing we need.
We need a coomonsense leader that can smell BS and call it BS when its near.

  5. Premier,
    please start at the top.
It is the administrators of these very organizations that are most out of control.

These administrators have all been trained for years at finacial managment and juggling and have been at their posts longer than a government term.
They are very skillful at writing policy that protects themselves. It is very hard to flush them out in 4 years.

Administration is the expanding part of the government and they are well overpaid.
We need more nurse not more administrators.
We need more road repairmen not more administrators.
We wnat more teachers not more administrators.

The head of Vancouver Regional Health just departed. He was paid $ 444,000. Please offer his replacement $ 222,000 and see if he/she will take the job. You have a lot of bargaining room. Renegotiate the others similarly from te top down.

Please fight hard with our money.

  6. “She says for the first time, every board member of a major Crown Corporation and major entity will have to sign a mandate letter that sets out standards of conduct.”

This has to be a sick joke. Her constant raiding of ICBC, BC Ferries and BC Hydro treasuries for her own general revenues has allowed Liberals to brag about no tax increases. The reaction of course has been these organizations had to raise our fees. How can she blatantly ignore facts? She obviously has little regard for telling the truth. She obviously has little regard for the electorate.
