UPDATED: Search called off for Fraser River boater

Vancouver, BC, Canada / (CKNW AM) AM980

Delta Police say the search for a boater on the Fraser River has been called off.

Acting Sgt. Sarah Swallows says police took over the search from the Coast Guard. But with no sight of the 30-year-old missing since Saturday, it’s now a case of wait and see.

“Unfortunately, the man who went overboard didn’t know how to swim and wasn’t wearing a life jacket. It doesn’t look like any alcohol involved or any sort of suspicious element or any sort of personal or mental health issues.”

Swallows says the man was with a friend when their boat ran out of fuel and drifted under the Alex Fraser Bridge.

He fell overboard trying to dislodge the boat.
