Injured hiker rescued from island along the BC coast

Vancouver, BC, Canada / (CKNW AM) AM980

On the 70th anniversary of D-Day comes word of a rescue of hiker who fell into a World War 2 era bunker along the B-C coast.

It happened on Yorke Island at the south end of Johnstone Strait.

When the woman in her 60′s fell yesterday, fellow hikers used their cellphones to call for help.

She suffered head and chest injuries.

A Cormorant helicopter from CFB Comox rushed to the island and lowered two Search-and-Rescue Technicians 80 feet to the bunker complex where they stabalized the woman, loaded her onto a rescue litter, and eventually she was lifted to safety and flown to Campbell River where she was taken to hospital.

The RCMP vessel Higgitet also assisted in the rescue.
