New Killarney Seniors Centre a little closer to reality

Vancouver, BC, Canada / (CKNW AM) AM980

Plans for a new Killarney Seniors’ Centre are one step closer to getting underway but there are still hurdles ahead.

Vancouver City Councillor Raymond Louie says the City finally received an agreement in principle from the federal government on Thursday, from a promise made by M-P Wai Young in January to back the project.

But he says a firm funding agreement protecting taxpayers is still outstanding.

He says, “Until that funding agreement is signed there is no firm agreement that money will be reimbursed to us for any expenditures. So we have to go through the proper process and this is what I have been outlining all along.”

Young has said the City and Park Board are playing politics with this project.

She says City Councilors and Park Board officials shouldn’t be saying the feds haven’t made good on their promise, “I just feel so badly that our elected officials, leaders in the community who should be working with us and working with the seniors to get this done for them, are again manufacturing delays to move forward with this project.”

The feds are contributing $2.5 million dollars with the City and Province providing the remaining money.
