Today marks the launch of Safe Boating Awareness Week – with members of the Vancouver Police Marine Unit, Canadian Safe Boating Council, and MADD Canada joining in to point out the dangers of drugs and alcohol while boating, and the importance of life jackets.
The goal is to decrease the number of boating fatalities through public education.
The kick-off comes a week after a young woman died and three young men remain missing after going canoeing without life-jackets on Slocan Lake.
May long weekend is considered by many to be the “unofficial” start of summer, and officials say now is the time to raise awareness of the dangers that come with enjoying the sunny weather with a boat trip.
