The Mounted Police Professional Association is calling on the Federal government to stall legislation that would grant the RCMP Commissioner more powers.
This in the wake of a looming Supreme Court of Canada decision on member’s rights to unionize.
Spokesperson Rob Creasser.
“I think the government is being rather opportunistic to try to get these kind of quick tracked before the Supreme Court has a chance to actually say whether the system of representation in the RCMP is constitutionally valid.”
Creasser adds the government plans to implement new laws in June that would increase the RCMP Commissioner’s powers in matters of discipline, demotion and discharge– something Creasser says is great for a benevolent dictator, but not member’s of the force.
