Killer of Laura Szendrei finally named

Vancouver, BC, Canada / (CKNW AM) AM980

We can finally tell you the name of the young man who beat to death 15-year-old Laura Szendrei.

The judge has lifted the publication ban and we can now tell you his name is Wyatt DeBruin.

He is the man who hit Szendrei in the head with a pipe at Delta’s Mackie Park three years ago leaving her to die the next morning.

DeBruin was six days shy of his 18th birthday at the time of the murder, so he was charged as a youth, but citing the nature of the crime, the judge later sentenced him as an adult and after a delay, we can now reveal his identity.

Laura’s father Mike had few words outside court, “I don’t know what they’re protecting. He’s a murderer. Just treat him like everybody else. I don’t know what the favours are for for the guy. I don’t know.”

The judge did order a ban on DeBruin’s image after lawyers argued he has received threats.

The now-21 year old is serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for seven years.

  1. “Life in prison with no eligibilty for parole for 7 years” was a gift to this child killer in the first place.Given that he will still be young when he gets out, everyone in BC should know who he is. There is no justice if the criminal is not exposed for all to see.
Condolances and sincere sympathy to the family and friends of this young lady.May your lost loved one Rest in Peace. Her passing in such a horiffic way in a public park that should be safe for everyone broke my heart too.

  2. ahh – poor lad – he has been sent death threats. Laura got death! She had no choice as to whether her picture was in the papers under a headline of “murder”

    • This guy will be out of jail in a couple of years. All he needs to do is change his name ….and he can disappear into the woodwork , until he thinks that maybe he should try to get friendly with another innocent girl.
